SkillNG trains campus journalists on how to use digital tools

[Ibadan]–SkillNG, a startup that creates a medium for the acquisition of entrepreneurship, digital and vocational skills by bringing trainees closer to trainers has trained campus journalists from select few universities in southwest Nigeria on how to use digital tools and the social media in knitting compelling stories.

In attendance were campus journalists from the University of Ibadan, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) among others.

The training held at Mellanby Hall Old Senior Common Room, University of Ibadan.

The facilitator, Mr Oredola Ibrahim, a former Editor-in-Chief and President of the Union of Campus Journalists, University of Ibadan stated that the use of search engines, especially Google, has array of features which could “give you any information you need just searching smart.”

He highlighted certain commands that can make searches on search engines “smart”.

Few of the smart search commands he doled out were the use of quotation. “This helps you to search for the exact word or phrase,” explained. He also mentioned the use of “minus sign or NOT” which he said “removes the specified term from results.” among other tons of commands to get relevant results from Google searches.

Moving forward, he mentioned that, “as Campus Journalists, you have to learn to search smartly. There is much to what Google can do for you than you can imagine.

He equally opened the eyes of the Journalists to other platforms like Google Alerts, Google Images and InterviewJs, a webpage template for interview. InterviewJs is a brainchild of Al-Jazeera.

“This platform hopes to make interview easier and faster. The future of interview is this model,” he stressed.

He added: “Research is an important aspect of learning. It expands knowledge, depicts professionalism and enhances understanding of concepts. It makes you know your onions.”

SkillNG is a Tony Elumelu Award recipient startup that sees to empowering youths on the demands of the digital world and how to create more jobs through skill acquisition by building a direct link between trainers and trainees.
